The Wall Street Journal published an article in October, 2012, referencing that the American Society for Training and Development had reported that in 2011 U.S. firms spent about $156 BILLION on employee learning but that research had shown due to little follow-up a staggering 90% of the new skills were lost within a year! In my opinion, that is quite an investment to just throw away!
In this article, Dr. Salas, a professor of organizational psychology at the University of Central Florida and a program director at its Institute for Simulation and Training also referenced that by the time you go back to your job after receiving training only 10% is retained and without the ability to utilize and practice what you have learned, eventually you are going to lose it.
This does not surprise me at all since that was the inspiration behind the techniques and strategies that TITANIUM uses to train, coach, and consult with our clients both personally and professionally. You see, that nasty word, CHANGE, is so difficult for some people, they often choose not to utilize their new found skills and tools that they have been taught, even though they are meant to help them succeed. Dr. John Trent wrote a book called, The 2 Degree Difference, and I think this is a great example of how important it is to take small steps to gain drastic outcomes and so thus change can be EASY and NATURAL! At TITANIUM, we utilize the Power of Color, Language, and Physiology ™ with our clients, to access the unconscious state and the natural tools that we all have within us, to make them a conscious muscle. This makes them easy to use but most importantly, immediately used. Increasing the effectiveness of the RESULTS and percentage of knowledge retained!
In the last decade corporations have shifted their mentalities and structures to be more ‘team oriented’ implementing team leaders and trainers. With the ever changing roles, technology within corporate positions and roles, as well as legislation that it seems every industry and every position within that industry needs to follow; the thought of having corporate trainers on site or even sending staff to corporate training is definitely not as effective as it once was (even when 10% was retained).
If you did a web search of “Business Coaching” you will find over 59 million results. I believe this is proof that our mentalities and approaches are shifting. All success stems from a strong foundation of self-confidence and with the rising mental health concerns of anxiety and depression, it is evident that people are yearning to grow their confidence.
Now, what I am about to say may cut back on some of my own target market, haha, but I believe it is key to further the success of corporations and the individuals that make them run everyday. With that, WAKE UP, corporations! The days of a corporate trainer or training department is dwindling. You have team leaders that are hands-on everyday with the techniques, strategies, team themselves, and changes that can train your new employees; utilize them for the technical aspects and ensure they don’t have too much on their plates that they are not able to effectively do this for their team. Generation X and Generation Y/Millennials are more motivated about feeling good about what they do, the ability to advance knowing they are contributing to the success of their organizations, and opportunity for self-development and improvement (Journal of Business & Economics Research – August 2008 Volume 6, Number 8). So if you want to gain more efficiency, productivity, create a TRUE culture, decrease turnover and unnecessary time off of your team members, then INVEST in their psychological growth and Success! Invest in a Corporate Coach to be on retainer or even onsite! The more you can understand your team, ensure key people are in the key roles, grow them individually; the better off you, your team themselves, and your bottom line will be!
Future forward is Coaching!
