re·source: stock or supply of money, materials, staff and other assets that can be drawn on by a person or organization in order to function effectively
I believe throughout time, the last portion of this definition has been lost. We forget that we have an abundance of “resources” at our fingertips all the time yet most go unused. Why is that? Why does it seem that ‘a few bad apples ruin it for the rest’ tends to be the common response? Are people losing ALL communication skills they were taught as a child that they are unable to address the FEW versus what appears to be easier to blanket the majority with new rules, new laws, and new approaches that only limit the overall effectiveness; when the resource was intended to make something, indeed, more effective?
Its not just with businesses that I have worked with that I witness this happening and I’m sure you will agree. It is also all around us: our businesses, our schools, our sporting events, our public venues, our laws, our society as a whole.
When I say “Human Resources” most would think of the department at their employer in which handles the on-boarding of a new employee, training, employee benefits; but at the same time I have heard many people make comments that the “Human” part of that same department seems to have been lost and I would have to agree.
However I truly believe that it is the “Human” part of resources that has been lost in ALL areas. Not just that department at your employer but a lot of departments within corporations, organizations, families, and friends.
What we focus on will come to fruition. So, if we focus on ‘the few bad apples’ and blanket the rest with decisions based on them, is it a surprise that the “human” aspect has been lost? Why blanket with negativity? Humans are not born negative and they do not have to thrive off of pessimism. but the more we surround each other with it, the easier it seems to have become. Why do you think mental illnesses have skyrocketed over the the last decade?
We are all a resource to one another. A HUMAN RESOURCE to all of the departments in life: our corporations, our organizations, our families, and our friends. You should not need to have a title or college degree to remember that. You just need to be human and have a heart to remember it. Questions are not dumb when ideas are created from them and they empower a more effective function. Technology is great but it is not human and ideas are not thought of from technology, advances in society are not made from technology; everything in our future is designed by us. Humans.
So, remember YOU are the HUMAN in HUMAN resources and YOU have the POWER and ASSETS to bring to other people, corporations, and organizations to empower them to function effectively. Do it with your heart and you won’t forget you are Human. That is when we will ALL yield the maximum results within ourselves and from each other.
